WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS (AP) - A party of floaters on the Smith River has found one of the caches left by Scotty Allen, a hermit-like trapper who lived in the Smith River country for more than four decades before his death earlier this year.
Allen's main base was a cabin on Tenderfoot Creek, a tributary of the Smith, but he kept caches of food and clothing all along the river.
Members of the Montana State University cross-country ski team were floating the river when they discovered some parachute string leading to the cache, said Greg Johnson of Bozeman, a member of the party.
Allen's cache included a 1938 Illinois Herb Almanac and a 1942 Jehovah's Witnesses yearbook and four 1938 $1 silver certificates.
