‘I don’t believe in God’

09/28/02

Dear Mr. [REDACTED]:

Thanks for your letter of September 21 and for the check that you enclosed. I trust That by this time you have received the copy of the certiorari petition that I sent you.

To answer your questions, I think there probably does not exist anything that I could reasonably be described as God. The Bible has been used as a tool to help keep human behavior in check, but it certainly was not the first such tool. Virtually every society has had some tools for keeping human behavior in check, though in many cases the tools have been very crude and simple. The philosophy or religion of Confucianism predates the Bible or at least parts of it, and was probably an equally sophisticated tool for keeping human behavior in check. But the techniques of propaganda that exist today, backed by the electronic media and the modern printing press, far surpass the Bible, Confucianism, and anything else that has existed in the past.

You write, “My point was that you could have put yourself in a position where the mass media would have had to embrace you.” That, if true, is a surprise to me. Would you like to explain how I could have done that? In any case, getting publicity for oneself is not enough to accomplish anything in regard to the technology problem. The latter can be done only through revolutionary action. See Manifesto, paragraphs III, 140–42.

Sincerely yours,
Ted Kaczynski

In prison, Kaczynski received many letters from people who urged him to embrace faith. But he has said he doesn’t see scientific proof that God exists.
