Family of Slain Timber Lobbyist Files Suit Naming Kaczynski
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — The family of Unabomber victim Gilbert B. Murray has filed a wrongful-death lawsuit naming Theodore Kaczynski as a defendant.
Murray, a timber lobbyist, was killed April 24, 1995, when a package bomb exploded in his Sacramento office. His family filed their lawsuit on the anniversary of his death Wednesday.
The lawsuit alleges Kaczynski “secretly located and set off a bomb” that killed Murray, and as a result, has left the Murray family to suffer “extreme and severe mental anguish.”
Murray is believed to be the last victim of the Unabomber, who is linked to bombings that have killed three people and injured 23 others over the past 18 years.
Kaczynski, 53, was arrested April 3 at his rural Montana cabin on a single charge of possessing bomb components. The former University of California, Berkeley, math professor has not been charged in connection to any of the Unabomber attacks.
Murray’s wife, Connie, and son, Wilson, filed the lawsuit without a lawyer in Sacramento Superior Court. Mrs. Murray would not comment on it.
Kaczynski is the only named defendant in the lawsuit, which also includes an unspecified number of other defendants listed only as “Does.”
It seeks general damages in excess of $50,000. The family also claims funeral, burial, legal expenses and the loss of Murray’s earnings.
“The conduct of the defendants was extreme and outrageous and exceeded the bounds of decency of a civilized society,” the suit says.
